Our Sustainable Horticulture Approach

We don’t use peat. Peatlands are important natural habitats that store carbon, support wildlife and help regulate water. Extracting peat for horticulture damages these valuable ecosystems and releases stored carbon. All of our plants are grown using peat-free growing media as part of our commitment to more sustainable horticulture.

We don’t use herbicides or routine chemical sprays. Our horticulture team takes a hands-on approach to growing, using careful cultivation, hand weeding and good growing practices to keep our plants healthy.

This approach helps us care for the soil and support the wildlife and biodiversity within the garden.

Grown in Sussex, Cared for by Experts

Our plants are grown here in Sussex and are well suited to the local climate and growing conditions. They are hardened off on site and ready for planting, helping them establish in their new surroundings. Our seasonal range includes plants selected and grown with Sussex gardens in mind, from colourful flowering plants and herbs to plants for borders and containers.

Growing plants for Brighton is part of the history of One Garden Brighton. The gardens at Stanmer have a long horticultural tradition, with plants grown here for the local area for generations.

Today, our horticulture team continues that tradition, growing plants on site and bringing together the heritage of the garden with a modern approach to sustainable horticulture. Our plants are grown by a small but dedicated horticulture team who take pride in every plant we produce.

From propagation and planting through to watering, nurturing, and hardening off, our team cares for the plants throughout their time at One Garden Brighton. Their knowledge and experience help us grow a diverse range of healthy, resilient plants suited to Sussex gardens.

Plants for Every Garden

Our plant selection changes with the seasons, with dedicated areas showcasing plants for different growing conditions and garden needs.

Depending on the time of year, you’ll find everything from shade-loving plants, pollinator-friendly favourites, edibles and drought-tolerant plants to shrubs, roses and seasonal displays such as our prairie planting collection.

Our Show Garden

At the heart of our plant sales area is a miniature version of a double award-winning show garden, originally created by the Level 3 Garden Design students at One Garden as part of their Plumpton College course.

We’ve recreated the garden’s planting plan and incorporated their central hand-woven kernel feature. A new student-designed show garden is planned each year which will highlight the creativity of our students as well as inspiring visitors for their own gardens.

Plant of the Week

Every week, our expert team selects a Plant of the Week, a standout plant that’s looking its best or is about to come into flower and is particularly well suited to planting at that time of year.

Alongside the plant, we’ll share useful information about its growing habits, preferred conditions and how to get the best from it in your garden.
