Thinking about getting into horticulture? This gentle and supportive course is the perfect starting point for adults with no prior experience, you’ll learn the very basics of horticulture, including seed sowing, planting, and preparing the ground—all taught in a relaxed, hands-on environment. 

Designed for total beginners, this part-time course is ideal if you’re exploring a new career path or simply want to feel more confident in your own garden. It’s also a great introduction if you’re thinking about progressing to further qualifications in horticulture.   

Delivered at One Garden Brighton, this course leads to the nationally recognised City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Practical Horticulture Skills. After completing the Award, you can progress to the Level 1 Certificate in Practical Horticulture in the spring, and, if you wish to build on your skills and knowledge further, continue to the Level 2 Diploma Know Your Garden. 

Modules

Generally, this course will cover: 

  • Sowing seeds 
  • Planting hanging baskets or containers 
  • Maintaining and caring for a planted area
  • Preparation of soil 
  • Repotting and planting new plants
  • Plant identification
  • Planting bulbs

What is it like to be a student on this course?

Future Opportunities & Career Progression

After completing the Award, you can progress to the Level 1 Certificate in Practical Horticulture in the spring, and, if you wish to build on your skills and knowledge further, continue to the Level 2 Diploma Know Your Garden. 

Course Fees

Students aged 24+ who are studying a second Level 3 course or aged 24+ who are studying their first Level 3 course will have to pay tuition fees, depending on the course.

Students on low income who can prove they earn less than £25,000 (from September 2024); are unemployed; or receive state benefits could be entitled to a tuition fee waiver.
